What is the EV Chargepoint Grant?

The EV Chargepoint Grant is the updated version of the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), which it replaced on 1st April 2022.

The previous grant offered up to £350 off a home-charging point for electric vehicles (EVs). Though the current grant specifically offers up to 75% off the installation costs of a home charging point.

Alternatively, you can still get £350 off the cost of an electric vehicle home charger, depending on which is lowest.

Am I eligible for the EV Chargepoint Grant?

The EV Chargepoint grant is open to those who either own or rent a flat with dedicated off-street parking. Only one charge point can be claimed for each eligible vehicle and household.

Landlords can also apply for funding and may receive up to £500 for each parking bay in a residential car park (with up to 60 bays).

To be eligible, you must:

  • Own a flat, or live in a rented property
  • Have dedicated off-street parking available
  • Either own, lease, or use an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle

Unfortunately, you will not be able to apply if you:

  • Have already claimed a grant including the former EVHS grant
  • Are soon to be moving house
  • Are simply requesting a new chargepoint
  • Want to move your current chargepoint to a new location
  • Are the owner of the house you live in

If you live in Scotland, you may also be eligible for an additional grant of up to £300 alongside the EV Chargepoint Grant.

You can read more about eligibility for the grant , including vehicle and parking requirements on the Government’s website.

Which vehicles are eligible for the EV Chargepoint Grant?

Although the grant is open to most electric vehicles, not all of these are eligible. All 100% battery electric vehicles are eligible. Though plug-in hybrid vehicles will only be eligible if they produce CO2 emissions of under 50g/km.

View a full list of eligible vehicles to see whether yours is eligible. Once you have determined this, you can then apply for the grant.

At The Taxi Centre, you’ll find a range of electric vehicles available which may be eligible for the scheme. These include the Kia Niro, MG5 EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the Volkswagen ID.3.

How to apply for the EV Chargepoint Grant

To apply for the EV Chargepoint grant, you’ll first need to contact an installer who is authorised by OZEV and get a quote. You can find installers near you by entering your postcode on the Government’s chargepoint installer page.

If you are happy with the quote, you can then begin your claim and will receive a link to an online form to complete.

Once your application has been approved, your chosen installer will be notified that they can begin the work. This must be completed within 90 days of your application’s approval, otherwise an extension must be requested.

The EV Chargepoint grant will then be claimed on your behalf by the installer once your home charging point has been installed. This will be shown on the invoice subtracted from the total installation cost. The installer will submit details of your chargepoint to OZEV along with images as a record.

There may be some instances where OZEV wishes to audit your EV chargepoint to check it is compliant. In this case, they will contact you and arrange for auditors to make a visit.
